Cheers to National Scotch Day Sunday, July 27 🥃

Calling all scotch lovers! We’re giving you yet another reason to make a toast this month, as National Scotch Day is Sunday, July 27, 2025. In honor of the holiday, we’re diving into the wide world of the iconic liquor—plus highlighting our scotch list and popular Scotch Club.

What Is Scotch?

Scotch is an aged whisky distilled from malted barley made exclusively in Scotland. In order to be considered a true scotch, it must be produced from malted barley, like wheat or rye, and matured in oak casks for at least three years, with a minimum bottling strength of 40% ABV. There are several categories of the alcoholic beverage, including single malt scotch, single grain scotch, blended scotch, blended malt scotch, and blended grain scotch, each made with its own distinct grains and distilling processes.

History of Scotch

Scotch’s history dates back to the 15th century, with the earliest documented record occuring in 1494. It’s alleged it evolved from early forms of distilled spirits introduced by monks in the late Middle Ages. Fast-forward to 1690, when the earliest reference to a distillery—aka the renowned Ferintosh distillery—was found in the Acts of the Scottish Parliament. Over time, scotch distillation became more refined and was popularized in the Highlands. It wasn’t until the late 1800s to 1900s that it gained traction globally.
